Born to dairy farmers in rural South Gippsland, Victoria, Justin began his film career at the age of fourteen, making super8 films on and around the family farm, until leaving to study at Melbourne's Swinburne Film and Television School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Film + Television in 1986.   At Lemac Films, a film production house, he crewed on television and corporate documentaries.   Since 1996, Justin has been a freelance cinematographer, shooting numerous features, short films and television commercials, which have received local and international acclaim. Now based at Bondi Beach, Sydney, he is an active member of the Australian Cinematography Society.
