Previz is one of the new innovations and skills the cinematographer of the digital era must embrace. In 2006 I participated in the Macintosh beta testing group for new FrameForge 3D Studio, version 2.5. Using this quick and intuitive previz storyboard programme, I can create 3D characters and locations/sets, based on location reccy pics.
By helping me to make informed choices based on what I have seen on my virtual location/set, FF3D enables me to save the production time and money on the real location/set. For example I can accurately choose the size of my greenscreen, the height of my camera crane and the amount of backdrop shoot-off required. I can know where, how high, and which lens I will need in any film or video format for any given set-up. I can then easily prepare clear and precise storyboards with accurate technical data to share with all production departments.
I have use FrameForge 3D Studio on numerous tvc and drama projects. It is a brilliant way for the director and cinematographer to discuss and develop a visual grammar for a project, accessible to all departments, right from their first meeting.
